Can an Ankle Sprain Cause a Fracture?
Various types of avulsion fractures may show false-negative results on X-rays because the avulsed bone fragments are small or overlapped. In addition, if patients do not take the injury seriously, fail to undergo X-ray examination, or receive improper treatment, the diagnosis of avulsion fractures and ligament injuries can easily be missed.
Treatment Depends on the Injury Type and Doctor’s Advice
For patients without fractures or ankle dislocation, immobilization with a semi-Rigid Ankle Brace for 3 weeks is sufficient to achieve ligament healing.
If an avulsion fracture is present, immobilization with a polymer splint for 6–8 weeks is required until fracture healing occurs. A functional brace may also be used to assist with subsequent rehabilitation exercises.
Severe injuries such as significantly displaced fractures or ankle dislocation require surgical treatment, followed by external fixation or a functional brace to support recovery
